John T. Nickens, PhD

I am a Clinical Psychologist and therapist with over 35 years in the mental health field. In my private practice I provide psychotherapy and counseling to adults, adolescents and couples, with a focus on assisting clients in developing skills for "intentional living." My offices are located in Oakland and Hayward, California.
In addition to private practice I have served as Director of Clinical Services at a local mental health agency. I've presented at National, State and local professional conferences and have served on numerous boards and commissions in the healthcare field, including as an appointee by the Governor of California to the California Mental Health Planning Council, as Chair of the Board of Directors of a local Patients' Rights Advocacy organization, as Chairperson of the San Francisco Black Mental Health Coalition, and as a member of the SF Black Coalition on HIV/AIDS.
I also have been a guest lecturer at the UCSF School of Nursing and a co-investigator on several School of Nursing research projects related to the relationship between mental health and physical health issues.
I earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the San Francisco School of Psychology, and hold membership in the following organizations:
*Diplomate in the American Psychotherapy Association *The California Psychological Association *The Bay Area African-American Psychotherapists Network *The American Academy of Bereavement *The Employee Assistance Professionals Association *Psychologists for Social Responsibility.
The Psychotherapy Practice Development SALON is the culmination of my interest in teaching and mentoring emerging therapists in conceptualizing and designing a private practice. Join me for an exceptional learning experience.
